John Speed Jones

Biography

  • Birth: John Speed Jones was born on 23 May 1893 in St. Paul, Madison Co., Arkansas.1
  • Marriage: He married Ursula Parrott, daughter of Palo Frank Parrott and Phatima Webb, on 22 March 1916 in Washington Co., Arkansas.2
  • Marriage: John Speed Jones married Killy England.3
  • Note: He WWI draft registration card dated 05 Jun 1917 says that he has a wife and a baby, but it does not give their names. in 1917 in Adair, Oklahoma.4
  • Residence: He lived in 1920 in Baron, Adair County, Oklahoma. This is where he was living when he registered for the draft in 1917.5
  • Marriage: He married Agnes G. Thomas after 1929.6
  • Milit-Beg: He began military service in 1942 in Yuba County, California, when he registered for the draft.7
  • Note: The draft registration card mentions Agnes Jones at the same address.7
  • Death: He died on 26 March 1967 in Westville, Adair Co., Oklahoma, at age 73.
  • Burial: He was buried in England Cemetery, Baron, Adair County, Oklahoma.8
  • Note: The woman who provided this information on John Speed Jones knew nothing of his brief marriage to Ursula Parrott, but she was not surprised. He was a pretty wild fellow, according to her. She doubted that he would have kept the infant of the union, and thought the child might have been raised by grandparents, if he/she lived.

John Speed JONES married Killy ENGLAND abt. 1920 - or 1915, according to the LDS. She was Indian. In 1920 she is living with 4 children in Adair Co. - the children's surname is Jones. John S. Jones is living in the same county. Her first husband may have been William Jones.

He might have been living in Adair Co. Oklahoma in 1920 (listed as a boarder) and in 1930 (again, listed as a boarder). The 1930 Census lists him as John S. Jones, a widower.

He registered for the draft for WW I in Baron, Adair Co. Oklahoma. He said he should be exempt because of a wife and baby. The date on the card is June of 1917. Ursula died in 1916, the same year her baby was born. Did he remarry that soon?
  • Note: There is some mis-information on Find-a-Grave Memorial #198817797 - The name of Ursula's husband was John Hamilton Jones and the baby was a boy, John Frank Jones, who lived until September (about 5 months). This contributor also says that John H. Jones married Melba Smith on 27 Nov 1937. THIS IS THE WRONG JOHN JONES.9
