  • Residence: She lived circa 1931 in Cross County, Arkansas. "I remember one summer when I was about two. Mother and Daddy and I lived in a big tent beside a river (St. Francis?) near Parkin or Wynne. I can see in my mind how the two beds were inside the tent, and the stove Mother cooked on and the chairs. I recall seeing Daddy swim in the river and once he hid behind the boat teasing me so I would think he had disappeared. And running thorugh the hail to a storm cellar out in a field, Daddy carrying me. And having a neighbor dog that I knew growl at me because I was wearing a hat. Oscar and his family came to visit us at the tent that summer. And I showed up for supper at that neighbor's most evenigs, not because I was hungry, but just because I loved to eat! Across the river was an Indian burial ground where people were digging up artifacts like pottery, and Daddy rowed Mother and me over there to see it one day. I still remember being in the boat and seeing the trees and water and sky, but don't recall the burial ground much."4

When I was in high school in Muskogee, Daddy was a regional field representative for the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Arkansas was one of the states he covered, and he visited it regularly. I remember when the war with Japan ended, for some reason our family was in Little Rock staying at a hotel there, and I remember all the celebrating going on among the people in the hotel dining room."4

  • Note: TRIBUTE - written by her youngest son, Harold Lee Hill:
My mother, the sweetest and best mother in the world, just like her mother Catherine Susan Troutt. She was 44 when I was born. But, a very hard worker. By the time I can remember, age 6, we were in the midst of the Great Depression. Dad had been injured in the mines and our income was rather small. Mom took in washing and ironing to give us some cash. She had a copper boiler that she heated water in on a coal stove, in the hot summer time, and scrubbed clothes on a wash board, ironed with a flat iron heated on the coal stove. All this for 25 cents a dozen. Later, when Dad got a settlement from the mines, we got electricity. Dad bought Mom a washiing machine and a coal oil stove (kerosene). Mom liked the washing machine but hated the stove. Dad had purchased them out of the Speigle catalog, so he packed up the stove and returned it.

Mom canned all summer long from Dad's garden. She always had a good spread on the table. We had a big breakfast, a big dinner (lunch), and supper was left-overs. She was the spiritual leader of the home. Taking us to church, when there was a service. As a kid I remember that she was the last one in bed, but the last thing she did was to kneel by the wood box in the kitchen and pour her heart out in prayer. She prayed for all of her children. She had great faith that the Lord would hear her prayers and would answer. In later years she continued to work. She mowed her yard with a hand mower until she was 92 and raised a garden. She got up early, tended to her garden work while cool. Gathered her fruit for the garden and canned it so she would have something to give to visitors.

(Harold's children called her their "Jelly Grandma" because she always had a jar of jelly to gie them when they were in her home.)5
  • Note: At the time of her death, she had 21 grandchildren, 39 great-grandchildren, and 7 great-great-grandchildren.
