  • Note: Anita Tally has a transcription of a letter from Calvin to his family dated July 14, 1845, after he left Tennessee for Missouri. He mentions two dates in the letter 12 April 1810 and 01 April 1812 - don't know to what the dates refer, but the letter implies perhaps it was the time when each of his parents left their families behind... Another source states that Richard Cooke came to Maury Co. Tennessee in 1810...

    In Oct. of 1846 he wrote a letter from Buchanan Co. Missouri, addressed to his cousin Amanda Rhea.

    We know that he is in California by 1865, because daughter Virginia was born in California.

    Obituary: J. Whitley Cooke died recently in California. He was a son of Maj. Richard Cooke and brother of Col. B. H. Cooke, and has many relatives in this section. [Date 4/13/1911, Vol. IX, No. 15, Page

  • Immigratn: He immigrated in 1847 to Oregon. In 1847, he signed on as Co-Captain of the largest wagon train to venture to Oregon that year from Buchanan, County, Missouri in the St. Joseph area. They left on April 15 and arrived into Oregon City by September 15 over the Barlow Trail. The wagon train was made up of Baptists from central and NW Missouri, over 125 wagons and about 600 people in all, on the six different smaller wagon groups within the larger enterprise. "C.W." kept a journal of this voyage until he became sick with "camp fever' in Wyoming. He recovered by the time he reached Oregon and took up farming near Oregon City. He met and married Rebecca Hood, who had come to Oregon in 1845 with the explorer Joel Palmer.4
