John Thomas Vaughan¹

• Note: This is from an email from Wesley Smith, a descendant of Isaac Vaughan: On 28 Jun 1890, J.T. Vaughan and H.F. Greenwell located the Horseshoe Placer (gold placer) on Libby Creek in Flathead Co. (now Lincoln Co.) Montana. They continued to locate and ground sluice other claims in this same immediate area thru the early 1900's when they patented and leased their claims. On 1 Apr 1904, John applied for a claim there of 5.88 acres. On 14 May 1909, he and his partner filed for a claim of 224.14 acres. This claim was named the "Eldorado Placer". All of these claims are in present Lincoln Co. about 23 miles southeast of the town of Libby, in a beautiful valley near the "Cabinet Mountains Wilderness Area". The claims were located in sections 1, 2, 11, & 12 of 27N - 31W and near the headwaters of Libby Creek.
  
  Today, in the Kootenai National Forest, there is a recreational "gold panning area" on Libby Creek. There, you are free to dig with hand tools and keep what you find. In 1889 - 1890, John T. Vaughan and Hillary F. Greenwell (male), his partner, hand dug a mining ditch from above Libby Falls, down to their claims. This 6000 foot long ditch supplied water for placer and subsequent hydraulic mining ventures. This "Libby Creek Recreational Gold Panning Area" is on the old Vaughan/Greenwell claims.¹
