Caroline1

Pedigree Link
F, #238, b. circa 1810

Partner: John Craig (b. circa 1770, d. December 1839)

Biography

  • Birth: Caroline was born circa 1810 in Virginia.2
  • Note: There is a land grant for Isaac Easterly who may be Caroline's father - on the south side of the Sequatchie River. on 9 January 1830 in Marion County, Tennessee.3
  • Marriage: She married John Craig, son of William Craig and Martha Russ, before 1832.2
  • Name-Marr: As of before 1832,her married name was Caroline Craig.
  • Note: There is an Isaac Easterly on the tax list of Marion Co. TN in 1836. Marion Co. is part of the Holston Conference of the Methodist Church. in 1836.
  • Note: Also in the county is J. CRAGE p. 157, but I can't make any connection.

Perhaps her maiden name was Easterly or Easterling. There was an Isaac Easterly who preached in the Sequatchie Valley (part of the Holston Conference) in 1827. The Sequatchie Valley includes these counties in Tennessee: Marion, Sequatchie, Bledsoe, and Cumberland. There is an Isaac Easterly in Washington Co. Tennessee in 1830 (census, p. 58). Some Easterly men whose names might be brother to Caroline include Christopher, Jacob, Noah, Abraham, George, Pain? After further research, I still suspect that this is Caroline's father or some type of father-figure, but I cannot document a connection.

There is a Joshua Easterly b. 1812 living in Marion Co. TN in 1850.
Living in Doniphan Co. Kansas in 1860 is a Simon or Simeon A. EASTERBROOK, who enlisted at Elwood. He was in Co. E of the 1st Kansas Infantry, enlisted as sergeant, discharged as private. Elwood is the town near the river where a Mrs. Caroline Craig bought property.I think now that this is not our Caroline. Also, there is a Rev. John Easterbrook buried in Doniphan Co.

In Perry Co. Alabama in Sep 1883 a probate case for Mrs. Caroline Gilliam - Wm A Craig is mentioned as a commissioner, see notes p. 5-15. Further research indicates that this is not our Caroline - this woman's maiden name was Dorroh

Some notes on Ann Easterling (?)
Check for Ann Easterling b. SC 1780
Living in Richmond Co. GA in the 1850 census, presumably with son’s family

Also Ann Easterling b. 1777 SC
Living in Barnwell Co. SC in the 1850

Rebecca Easterling (widow of Thomas Easterling?) living in Scott Co. Virginia in the 1830 with daughter and son, both under 20 years old. Maybe Caroline's mother?
  • Residence: Caroline lived in 1840 in DeKalb County, Alabama. In the DeKalb Co. Alabama census there is Caroline CRAGG, age 20-30, with son and daughter. Both children are between 5-9 years old.4
  • Note: (disproven) A Mrs. Caroline Craig bought property in Elwood, Doniphan Co. KS - she bid on it in November, received the property in Feb 1861 but this woman was born in Ohio - not our Caroline.5
