Ruby was born near Purdy, Missouri and was the youngest of 7 children. She graduated from Hutchinson H.S. in Hutchinson, Kansas in 1932. Ruby attended Hutchinson Jr. College until 1934, and completed her college degree at SMU in 1969 at the age of 55. In 1936, Ruby married Lindsay Greene, whom she met in the choir at the First Presbyterian Church in downtown Dallas. Together they lived at 8600 Greenville Avenue. They had 5 children, Charles, Nancy, and Stanley, who live in Dallas, David, who lives in Oregon, and Donald, who lives in Waco. She also has five grandchildren, Meredith, James, Adriel, David and Lindsay. Ruby is remembered warmly by her family and friends as being a happy lady with a quick wit and the spirit of one perpetually 23 years old. It is said she never spoke an unkind word about anyone. Friend or stranger, Ruby always welcomed visitors to her home and, with a true spirit of country hospitality, to the dinner table. She loved raising orchids and animals of all kind. Their homestead was a sanctuary to stray cats and dogs looking for loving care. Ruby has been welcomed into Heaven by her husband, Lindsay, her parents and her 6 brothers and sisters. The family would like to extend sincere gratitude to the staff at Walnut Place Nursing Home, where Ruby has spent her last 6 years. They provided truly loving care for Ruby and all who cared for her knew what a special person she was. All are invited to her memorial service, which will be held at Restland Wildwood Chapel on Friday, April 11, 2003 at 1:30 PM followed by interment at Restland Memorial Park. Family to receive friends from 6-8 PM Thursday, April 10, 2003 at Restland Funeral Home. Family and friends are welcome to gather at The da Vinci School, 5442 La Sierra Drive, Dallas, after the services. Services for Lindsay M. Greene, 94, of Dallas, a retired investor and recording artist and a founder of the Dallas Civic Opera, will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the Restland Wildwood Chapel.
He died Thursday at his home after a lengthy illness.
A native of Kentucky, Greene moved to Dallas in 1911. He was a U.S. Army sergeant in France in World War I.
Greene took part in the First Presbyterian Church Quartet, later called the Ashenden Quartet, and the Dallas Original Sacred Heart Singers. The two groups recorded a total of 16 records during the 1920s, producing 120,000 copies of each. He was also a member of the Blue Blaze Quartet, which performed on KRLD Radio in the late 1920s and early 1930s.
In the 1930s, Greene and his brother, Charles Greene, opened the first motel chain in the Southwest, the Blue Top Tourist Courts, with seven properties in the Dallas area and two in Houston. In 1960, they sold most of the motels.
Greene was a founder of the Dallas Civic Opera and a founder and board member of the Dallas Lyric Theatre and the Dallas Little Theatre. In 1950, he was one of the four founders of the Greenhill School. He also served as a director and trustee. He was also a member of the Bonehead Club, a local roasting society.
He attended Dallas College in 1961 as an art student.
Greene is survived by his wife, Ruby Greene of Dallas; four sons, Charles and Stanley Greene, both of Dallas, Donald Greene of Waco and David Greene of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; and a daughter, Nancy Greene of Calabasas, Calif.5
