Bennett, A J

Biography

  • Birth: Andrew Jackson Bennett was born in 1823 in Missouri.2,3
  • Marriage: He married Mary Williams, daughter of John Jefferson Williams and Nancy M. Bowles, circa 1848. Researcher Tony Rockefeller said that this couple married in Barry Co. in 1863, and that his older children were born to his first wife, whose name also was Mary. I did not find a marriage in Marriage Book B for Barry Co., Missouri, which covers the year 1863, for this couple, so I am assuming for now that she was his first and only wife. On the other hand, there appear to be a Mary Williams living with her parents in 1850 in St. Francois Co. (p. 159A - but she is listed out-of-order from the other children) and ANOTHER Mary, married to Andy Bennett (p. 200).2
  • Occupation: Andrew Jackson Bennett was a farmer in 1850.4
  • Residence: He lived in 1850 in District 80, St. Francois Co., Missouri.4
  • Residence: He lived in 1860 in Liberty Township, St. Francois Co., Missouri.5
  • Milit-Beg: He began military service on 1 July 1863 in St. Francois County, Missouri. He was in the 9th Regiment of the Missouri Cavalry (Elliott's) and was a first sargent.6
  • Marriage: He married in 1863 in Monett, Barry County, Missouri.7
  • Note: According to his descendants, he was one of the 49ers who went to California. He found gold, but he lost his fortune. He returned to Arkansas and fought in the Civil War (however, he was living in Francois Co., MO in 1860) - he moved to Barry Co. in 1871.

    A grandson, R. A. Turpin, b. 1872, was living with this family in 1880.
  • Residence: He lived in 1871 in Barry Co., Missouri.8
  • Death: He died on 15 April 1893 in Barry Co., Missouri, at age ~70.9
  • Burial: He was buried in Bullington Cemetery, Purdy, Missouri.7

  • Note: There might be a connection to Iron Co., Missouri. In 1860 in Reynolds Co., Missouri there is a Lucinda DINKINS age 38 b. Kentucky - see p. 27 of Bennett notes.

Her father was born in Alabama, according to the 1880 Missouri Census.

from Vada, aunt of Dwight Dinkins (dwightddinkins@comcast.net)

I have written that Uncle Eldon, my Dad's brother told me this: The Dinkins came to Barry Co., Missouri about the time of the Civil War from Bretleth Co., (BREATHITT) Kentucky . One girl Sarah. Twins Henry and Harry, Bill was in Hamilton Texas and one unnamed. Harry lived around Purdy and I visited his daughter Madge and Maryellen and son Bill. I have some correspondence from some of Madge's relatives when I worked on this geneology at one time from Colorado. Henry's mother died in childbirth while the father was away at war . Henry's father was killed in the Civil War in the Union Army and buried close to the Mississippi River. Henry was raise by the Davis family, I have written down. Another place I have that the twins were raised by Aunt Lindy Smith east of Purdy. The class I took said you need to confirm info 3 times to prove it correct. Other stuff I have written down not confirmed; the father Henry Hillary Dinkins, Co D Captain Woods Co , Kan Rangers. Harry's name may be Elvis Harrison Dinkins my cousin insisted when he gave me a tin type picture of him so confirm the correct things. I Have Henry Hillary born 1830 and died 1863 and married Rebecca.

(The Kansas Rangers were in the Battle at Wilson Creek near Springfield, Missouri)

In Simpson Co., Kentucky in the 1850 census (p. 33B) there is an AGNES STEWART - age 55 b. Tennessee - could this be the mother of Amy Rebecca STEWART and the grandmother of Sarah Agnes Dinkins???? There are also HARRISON people in her household....might relate to Elvis Harrison Dinkins...
